|  OFFICAL WOODEN EASTER EGGS 2011 Rolling Easter eggs on the White House South Lawn is one of the most eagerly anticipated spring events in the Nation's Capitol. This unique tradition began more than a century ago when local children gathered on the Capitol grounds to picnic and roll colorful Easter eggs down the hill. As the event grew, so did the crowds, eventually prompting Congress to ban the use of the Capitol lawn as a playground. As the story goes, in 1878, realizing the event needed a new location, President and Mrs. Rutherford B. Hayes warmly welcomed local children to roll eggs on the South Lawn of the White House. In the early years, presidents often held an afternoon reception in the East Room for the children. But as participation grew, President and Mrs. Theodore Roosevelt began new tradition by greeting the crowd and watching the festivities from the South portico. Presidents and first ladies have opened the gates to the White House grounds and hosted the celebration ever since. Children have always been elated to receive a signed wooden Easter egg signed by the President and First Lady.
