Ida Saxton McKinley

Carnation"

Ida and William McKinley took the red carnation as their good luck symbol. They had arranged a sign between them, when in a crowd or separated, he would touch the flower in his lapel and then gesture his hand toward her. The gesture meant “I love you Ida.” On the day of his assassination, he gave his carnation to a little girl who was crying. His luck had left him, but her love never would.
